Patty Hammarstedt

Artist Statement:

The power of words, I believe, is amplified through visual interpretation. As a calligrapher, book artist and letterpress printer, I create visual voice of written words with my book arts. Through these art forms, I have discovered my own voice as an artist.

I have practiced calligraphy and book binding for as long as I can remember amidst careers as an oncology nurse and then as a book conservator at Winterthur and the Brandywine River Museum in Delaware. As a mother and perpetually re-located corporate wife I have lived abroad as well as in the US where I gathered many unique experiences. These life experiences are embodied in my art.

My art has been exhibited and resides in private collections in this country, Singapore and the UK. I have taught calligraphy throughout those countries and currently continue to teach.

With my recent move to Santa Fe with my husband for our permanent home, the voice of my art has become infused with the enchantment of the Southwest. I am adding another dimension to my art by creating limited edition books which incorporate my own writing, printmaking and letterpress printing.
